1. Environmental problems of adhesives
The environmental problems of adhesives are mainly environmental pollution and human health hazards due to harmful substances in the adhesive, such as volatile organic compounds, toxic curing agents, plasticizers, thinners and other additives, harmful fillers. And so on.
1.1, volatile organic compounds
Volatile organic compounds (VOC) are found in many adhesives, such as organic solvents in solvent-based adhesives; free formaldehyde in trialdehyde gels (phenolic, aldehyde, melamine); styrene in unsaturated polyester adhesives; Unreacted monomer in acrylate emulsion adhesive; methacrylic acid formaldehyde in modified acrylate fast solid structure adhesive; polyisocyanuric acid in polyurethane adhesive; sulfur dioxide in dihydro acrylate adhesive; Methanol; thickener ammonia in acrylate emulsion, etc. These volatile substances are emitted into the atmosphere, which is very harmful, and some act as photochemical, ozone, and low-level ozone pollutes the atmosphere, affecting the growth of organisms and human health.
Some halogenated hydrocarbon solvents are substances that destroy the ozone layer of the atmosphere. Some aromatic hydrocarbon solvents are very toxic and even carcinogenic. The irritating odor of methyl methacrylate, sulfur dioxide, and ethylamine is large, and it can be described as a poison of pollution, which deteriorates the atmospheric environment.
1.2, toxic curing agent, plasticizer
Aromatic amine curing agents are very toxic, and some can cause bladder cancer, such as m-phenylenediamine. The plasticizer phenolic acid triester is extremely toxic. In the past, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and dioctyl phthalate (DOP) were considered to be non-toxic and harmless. Today, DBP and DOP are found to be harmful to human health, and endocrine disorders may occur when inhaled. Animal tests have shown that it is especially harmful to the liver and kidneys and may even cause cancer. In addition to contact with food adhesives, the use of DBP and DOP in general adhesives is not a problem, but it should also be noted.
1.3, toxic filler
Adhesives use a wide variety of fillers, some of which can cause toxicities. For example, asbestos powder is very slender and has serious environmental pollution. It is a powerful carcinogen. Dust flies with the wind, enters the human body through the respiratory tract and capillary pores, and can accumulate in the lungs, leading to lung cancer, bronchial pain, mesothelioma and the like. The incubation period caused by asbestos is quite long, even up to 40 years. Japan called asbestos a "quiet time bomb." Long-term inhalation of quartz powder can cause silicosis. Fillers or pigments containing toxic heavy metals (lead, chromium, nickel) are also very harmful to humans.
1.4, toxic additives
When the base resin (or rubber) for the adhesive is determined, the formulation and application properties of the rubberizer depend to a large extent on the conditioning modification of the auxiliaries used. It is necessary to pay attention to the toxicity of some auxiliaries. It is confirmed to be carcinogenic, and BHT is suspected of causing cancer. MOCA, azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN), and dibutyltin dilaurate have greater toxicity.
